It might just be the perfect mix of talent, youth, experience, and desire that has Oak Lawn Community High School boys soccer coach Nate Joiner so excited for this season. And after starting out 9-1-1 in their first 11 games, the Spartans are proving they are worth all the buzz.
With three sophomores, two juniors, and six seniors, Oak Lawn seemingly has it all. Sophomore Dylan Walsh is the leading scorer with 13 goals. Fellow sophomore goalkeeper Giovanni Gonzalez is doing a stellar job in net with six shutouts already recorded this year. Another sophomore Simon Komperda is the starting central defender.
The senior captains Armani Velastegui and Jose Aceves are the leading assist givers. Seniors Imad Amra and Yusuf Abdelazeez are anchoring the defense. The Spartans are poised to be in every game with a defense as strong as this one.
“With a nice mixture of youth and experience, the boys are hungry after last year’s losing season,” Joiner said. “We are trying to take it one game at a time and not look past anybody in the South Suburban Conference Red because this year, more than in the past, it is very even, and anyone can beat anyone else.”
