Man Pleads Guilty to Child Pornography

Oak Forest resident, Jason Akai, arrested in 2019 and indicted on more than 20 felony charges surrounding child pornography and criminal sexual assault of a child pleaded guilty last month, according to court records.

Akai, 47, was charged with 23 criminal felony counts that included predatory criminal sexual assault and child pornography. All but two charges leveled against Akai were dropped prior to the plea, in what is described as a negotiated guilty plea, according to court records.

According to the state attorney’s office, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services received a tip from an out of state therapist, resulting in Akai and one other suspect being arrested. The results of a multi-week investigation determined Kimberly Marie Schubert, 46, distributed pornographic images to Akai. Authorities recovered evidence from Akai’s home.

Schubert pleaded guilty in 2022 to sexually assaulting a child under the age of 13 and producing child pornography, the Daily Herald reports. She was sentenced to 9 years in prison.

Akai was a member of Oak Forest Cub Scout Pack 341, once serving as committee chairman. The charges did not involve any children with the Boy Scouts of America organization, police said at the time.

Akai was taken into custody June 20, 2019, and was initially held in Lake County Jail on $750,000 bond. He was released on bond shortly after his arrest and has remained so.

No further information from the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office was available.
